Groundwork for Building in the Black Hills

Every failed driveway, cracked slab, and wet basement in the Hills started as a site-work problem. Between expansive soils on the prairie side, granite and grade in the Hills, and snowmelt that has to gosomewhere, the dirt phase decides how the next thirty years go. We do grading, excavation, building pad prep, lot clearing, and driveway construction across Rapid City and the wider Black Hills — for our own builds, and as a standalone service for yours.

Building Pad & Foundation Prep

Cut, fill, compact, and certify — a pad your build can trust, with the foundation excavation dug to match the actual pour plan — because our own concrete crew is the one who drew it up. When the same crew plans the pour and digs the hole, the numbers line up.

Grading & Drainage

Rough and finish grading, swales, and slope corrections that move water away from structures. If your yard drains toward your foundation, that's a problem that only gets more expensive with time.

Lot Clearing & Driveways

Tree and brush clearing, rock removal, and gravel driveways with proper base and culverts. Building on raw land? We'll also set a storage container on site for tools and materials while the project runs.

Why It Matters Who Moves Your Dirt

  • We build on what we grade. An excavator who hands the site off has no skin in what happens next. Our concrete and construction crews inherit our own prep — so it's done right.
  • Local ground, local knowledge. Pennington County clay and Hill City granite are different animals; we work in both every month.
  • Straight answers. A site walk and a written estimate — free estimates — we usually respond within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does site prep cost for a new build near Rapid City?+

The honest answer is that it depends on your dirt — rock, slope, access, and how far we're moving material all matter. We look at every site in person and give a written number before any machine shows up.

Can you work on steep or rocky Black Hills lots?+

Yes — that describes half the lots in the Hills. Slopes, granite, and tree clearing are standard work for us, and we plan drainage from the first pass so your pad and driveway stay put in spring runoff.

Do I need a grading or excavation permit?+

It depends on where you are and how much dirt moves — the city of Rapid City, Pennington County, and Meade County each draw the line differently. We deal with the permitting as part of the job.

Do you dig basements and foundations?+

Yes. Foundation excavation, basement digs, and backfill — and because our own crew pours the footings and walls, the hole is dug to the pour plan, not to a guess.

What about driveways and access roads?+

We cut, grade, and gravel driveways and access roads, including the culverts and drainage that keep them from washboarding or washing out. If you want it paved in concrete, that is us too.
